What is COY?

The Conference of Youth (COY) is an international event where youth around the world gather on the theme of climate change in connection with the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This year, the host country of the COP is France. Thus, the COY will be held in Paris for three days from November 26th to November 28th, right before the COP21.

Since 2005, the COY has been held every year, a few days before the COP with YOUNGO as its advisor. YOUNGO is the official youth constituency at the UNFCCC since 2009 and aims to connect Youth NGOs around the world. The COY is run by youth organisations of the host country of the COP. In 2015, COY11 is hosted by the French Youth organisations: Avenir Climatique, CliMates, French Scouting Federation, and REFEDD.

Participants of the COY are not only youth negotiators. All young people are invited to take part in the various workshops, lectures from specialists and exhibitions, all under the theme of climate change. Also, this year is an extremely important year as the parties at COP21 will try to reach a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C. Youth at the COY11 will be supporting this ambitious agreement.

COY11

On this critical year of climate negotiations, for the first time in history, the COY will be organized outside of the host country of the COP – in 2015, the COY will be held on all continents! Why? Because not everyone can go to the other end of the world in November and because local issues have to be locally solved. The Local COY aims to create a connected and empowered international youth community for a more sustainable and desirable future. The Local COY will take place in 9 countries, including Japan, Canada and New Caledonia. COY11 is everywhere!

The East Asian region got a request to host a Local COY from the COY11 organization committee in France on September 2015. After concentration amongst climate youth organization in China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, it was decided that the climate youth NGO, Climate Youth Japan would host the Local COY for East Asia in the largest city in the world- Tokyo. Under the concept of “COY11 is everywhere”, COY 11 Tokyo 2015 will be running on the same dates as the COY11 in Paris and will be connected to all the other Local COYs around the world.
