We’ve Got The Power & We’re Fully Charged!
From rare earth plants to megadams, rainforest depletion to lack of policies and enforcements, the otherwise beautiful and culturally unique land of Malaysia has been catching headlines lately with news of strong environmental campaigns fighting for climate justice and stronger political support in the conservation of the nation’s natural heritage.
Earlier this month, on the 10th to the 15th of December, an amazing group of 30 youth from 14 Malaysian states along with some from Indonesia, Finland, Ghana, Nigeria, Pakistan and Singapore who share a common concern and foresee a common goal got together at #PowerShiftMsia 2013 to reinforce the urgent need for climate action and inspire the masses of youth in this country to take action against the ticking clock of climate change.
Nestled in the outskirts of a busy city in Selangor, Malaysia, the venue selected by #PowerShiftMsia’s logistics team was one that created a positive energy for the participants. From the greenery of the surrounding environment to the fresh air at every session and healthy vegetarian meals in between each break, the participants were not only at #PowerShiftMsia for the idea of a cleaner future, they embraced the meaning of it in the whole 5 days.
Throughout the sessions, we welcomed prominent and inspiring speakers including, Dr. Gary Theseira, deputy head of the Environment Management and Climate Change division in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Hafiz Isa of the Department of Environment, Jarren Tam from the Center for Public Policy Studies and a host of speakers from local NGO’s, clean energy and environmental movements who shared their stories with us during the workshop and plenary sessions.
The workshop empowered its participants with the necessary skills in policy and governance, creative activism, digital campaigning and media. During the 5 days of workshop, the participants were seen grouped up together during breaks discussing their action plan upon completing the workshop and building strong bonds of friendship. Participants continued to inspire each other to stand together in solidarity against misconception of energy resources in the nation and to continue the fight for clean energy and stronger environmental commitments.
As it was said by one of our amazing speakers, Steve McCoy, “You, the Gen Y, are the most important generation in the history of mankind, and you need to do something to save this world because otherwise it will be too late to pick up the pieces”.
The gathering ended on a positive note with many participants realizing that even though our numbers were small, with the right skills set, support from the right people and a burning desire for a cleaner future, we certainly have the power in our hands to make change happen.
