#PowerShiftMsia Beach CleanUp 2018

Why #beachcleanup?

Coral reefs are home to 25% of the marine species and they’re becoming vulnerable to climate change as evident in 2016, where 90% of the Great Barrier Reef were bleached due to rising seawater temperature. The threat gets more serious as recent research in Cornell University discovered corals entangled with plastic wastes are highly susceptible to diseases.

With the converging impacts from global and local threats, our marine ecosystem faces a bleak future if no efforts are being taken to reverse this situation. Hence, this cleanup effort, albeit a small one, still necessary to reduce the impact.

Project Objectives

  • To be part of the bigger national cleanup movement, and addressing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) particularly Goal 14 – Life Underwater.
  • To increase awareness of the general public especially Selangor citizens on marine debris and its impact on both the environment and subsequently human well-being

Expected Outcomes / Deliverables

  • Clean Pantai Remis, Jeram, Selangor
  • Provide Reef Check Malaysia, International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) and Selangor Government with collected Marine Debris data
  • Educate and engage 40 local volunteers on marine debris and beach cleanup movement
